Two new test benches are operational in the Tecnotrasmissioni testing department. The systems were designed and developed in collaboration with Apicom and customised to meet the company’s specific technical and production requirements.
The objective is clear: to reproduce as closely as possible the real operating conditions of a gearbox installed in a vehicle, whether a passenger car, commercial vehicle or truck.
Compared with the previous test benches, the new systems provide greater testing capacity in terms of both rotational speed and braking power. This enables more thorough testing under conditions that more closely reflect the actual operation of the transmission.
However, there is another, less visible factor that is particularly important for customers managing structured supplies. Every test performed on the new benches is linked to the unit’s unique serial number, with a report generated automatically.
The final test is no longer a stand-alone inspection: it becomes a recorded piece of data within the production history of that specific transmission.

A gearbox test bench is a system that sets the transmission in motion, reproducing the operating conditions it will encounter once installed in the vehicle, and measures its response. This includes gear engagement, synchronisation, behaviour under braking load, sealing performance and noise levels.
In an industrial remanufacturing process, testing is one of the final stages before packaging and shipment. It is the point at which all previous stages—disassembly, washing, component selection and assembly according to manufacturer specifications—are confirmed or disproved through measurable data.
Without testing on a dedicated bench, the quality of a component remains a claim.
With testing, it becomes a repeatable measurement performed on every individual unit.
What changes compared with the previous test benches?
Higher rotational speed and braking power
The new Apicom systems extend the testing range across two fundamental parameters.
A higher rotational speed makes it possible to verify the behaviour of the gearbox at speeds closer to those it will actually experience on the road.
Greater braking power allows the transmission assembly to be tested under a load that more closely reflects real operating conditions, rather than simply running without load.
For the customer, this means that anomalies occurring only under load can also be detected.
Uncertain gear engagement, borderline synchronisation or noise appearing beyond a specific threshold can therefore emerge at the plant rather than in the workshop.
Two testing lines
The introduction of two test benches, rather than just one, is not merely a quantitative improvement. It increases the production capacity of the testing department, reduces inspection times and provides greater flexibility when handling new product types and applications.

Test benches customised to Tecnotrasmissioni’s requirements
The systems were customised according to Tecnotrasmissioni’s technical and production requirements. The same approach has already been applied outside the company’s own facility: as part of the Stellantis Mirafiori Circular Economy Hub project, Tecnotrasmissioni acted as technical partner and coordinated the development—again together with Apicom—of test benches for the Group’s reconditioning departments.

What tests are performed on a transmission test bench?
Three main types of test can be carried out on the new benches.
1. Dynamic gearbox testing
This is the most comprehensive inspection and includes:
- Gear engagement verification — each gear is engaged and checked
- Synchronisation inspection — the synchronisers are checked to ensure that they operate correctly and without resistance
- Braking test on the shaft — the assembly is placed under braking load to reproduce operating conditions
- Differential operation testing — where applicable
2. Air leak testing
The transmission assembly is pressurised to verify its sealing performance and detect any leaks.
3. Noise inspection
Sound-level measurement helps identify abnormal vibrations and noise outside the permitted thresholds.
This is an indirect but highly sensitive indicator: an imperfect coupling or a gear with residual irregularities may become apparent through abnormal noise.
Noise inspection completes a process that begins much earlier, during component selection, where Tecnotrasmissioni uses its gear inspection instrument, developed in-house to detect dents and irregularities on every gear.
From testing to traceability: linking the test bench to the serial number
This is where the least visible, yet most tangible, value of the new systems can be found.
Every Tecnotrasmissioni remanufactured transmission is identified by a unique serial number. The test performed on the bench is linked to that serial number and becomes part of the unit’s technical and documentary history, together with the work carried out, the operators involved, the components used and the procedures applied.

The test report is generated automatically and linked to the serial number. Testing therefore becomes a documented and retrievable stage, even after a considerable period of time. In the event of an after-sales analysis, technical inspection or warranty return, there is no need to reconstruct from memory what was done to that gearbox: the information can be retrieved directly from its records.
For a distributor or vehicle manufacturer, this changes the nature of the discussion surrounding a non-conformity. Opinions are replaced by verifiable data. The new Apicom test benches are part of the production modernisation and digitalisation programme that Tecnotrasmissioni is developing within its Industry 5.0 project, together with the integration of MES and WMS systems into the company ERP and the installation of automated vertical warehouses.
